Entering the '21' Club, I felt like I was going back in time. It's like 1920's style - lots of history here, a place Humphrey Bogar might hang out in. It has an older crowd, but the place fills up fast. It also has a lot of history in movies being filmed there - All About Eve, Written on the Wind, Wall Street, and One Fine Day to name a few.
The tables are very close to each other (no private conversations here). The wait staff was very attentive to all our needs.
I started with the manhattan clam chowder (lots of veggies), striped bass with risotto (very tasty) and creme brulee (which was out of this world).

Let’s start with the good part of it.The food was excellent!Although it was restaurant week, ‘21’ went all out to come up with a variety of choices for their customers at lower-than-usual prices.I had the Green Tea-Rubbed Pork Chop.It was moist and flavorful with just a hint of green tea – not too overpowering. It took me twice the usual amount of time it takes for me to eat chops just because I was literally savoring each bite. And I topped it off with a delicious Chocolate Carmel Cake.
Now on to the reasons why I ended up giving ‘21’ a rating of 3 out of 5 tongues.First, the tables were all so close together.I could literally hear the conversations on either side of me and felt like I was part of the group! There was not a modicum of privacy. Second, the noise level was high.I’m not sure if it was because the restaurant was built so long ago and did not account for noise absorption, or because the tables were too close to each other.Third, I expected an upscale feel because of what I read on their website, the way the restaurant was featured in the movies, and the menu prices. But I didn’t get this impression. The tables (again!) played a part in this – there was no privacy, and the seat I had was uncomfortable. Also while we were there, the waiters were busy putting tables together for a bigger group and making a lot of noise.I expect this from a lesser establishment, but not ‘21’!Also, the interiors aren’t much to my taste. They had all sorts of company delivery trucks hanging from the ceiling which didn’t match the statues of jockeys in the front. One of our neighboring tables said that the interiors reminded her of Prime Rib, but I wanted to chime in and tell her that the interiors of ‘21’ reminded me of Friday’s!
